German Officials Consider Banning Cannabis at Oktoberfest Despite Legalization

Just weeks after Germany legalized cannabis for personal use, officials in the state of Bavaria are considering restricting cannabis consumption at Oktoberfest, one of the country’s most iconic events. The move comes as a surprise, given that Germany recently became the largest country in Europe to legalize weed.

According to reports, the Bavarian government is exploring the possibility of establishing cannabis-free zones at Oktoberfest, which attracts millions of visitors each year. The festival, which takes place in Munich, is known for its traditional Bavarian music, food, and beer consumption.

While Germans aged 18 and older are now legally permitted to possess up to 25 grams of cannabis in public and up to 50 grams at home, officials in Bavaria are concerned about the potential impact of cannabis consumption on public health and safety.

The new cannabis law, which came into effect on April 1, also permits the establishment of “cannabis clubs,” where members can grow and consume cannabis. However, commercial weed sales are still prohibited.

Bavarian officials are considering implementing fines of up to €1,000 for consuming cannabis in unauthorized public spaces or in the presence of children or young people. They are also evaluating the possibility of restricting cannabis consumption in other public areas, including Englischer Garten, one of Germany’s largest public parks.

The move has sparked controversy, with some arguing that it contradicts the spirit of the new cannabis law. Health Minister Karl Lauterbach has defended the law, saying that it aims to crack down on the black market and improve protection of children and young people.

However, conservative lawmakers, including Markus Söder, Minister-President of Bavaria, have expressed opposition to cannabis legalization, arguing that it will lead to increased drug use among young people.

As the debate continues, it remains to be seen whether Bavarian officials will succeed in banning cannabis at Oktoberfest. One thing is certain, however: the issue of cannabis legalization and regulation is far from settled in Germany.
